I Want What They Have: Ben Platt and Noah Galvin

Love is a many-splendored thing, especially when you’re gawking at it from the outside. In this column, we’ll be examining the celebrity couples that give us hope for our own romantic futures and trying to learn what we can from their well-documented bonds.

This column normally revolves around me craving something about a celebrity relationship that I don’t have, whether it’s Ben and Jen’s shared Dunkin obsession or Rihanna and A$AP Rocky’s ability to coordinate a belly-baring pregnancy photo shoot and make it look like the classiest thing of all time.

When it comes to the several-years-long relationship between actors Ben Platt and Noah Galvin, though, I’m perplexed, as I, too, am finally in a cute queer relationship (brag), and am no longer forced to resent the living hell out of every happy LGBTQ+ individual on the planet. And yet, I find myself jealous of them—why? Is it because they quite literally shared a role in Dear Evan Hansen I mean, you can’t buy that kind of meet-cute. (No offense to me and my partner for meeting on Twitter, which is a perfectly fine way to commence a relationship, but yeah, I’d rather we had locked eyes onstage while splitting the role of a gender-blind Bobby in Company.)

As if the way Platt and Galvin met wasn’t sweet enough, they persist in being extremely adorable about one another, as when Platt said in an 2021 Out magazine interview that Galvin “has a really unique ability to help me to … be present where I am and to make the life that’s happening day to day too wonderful to not want to be on the ground for it.” Crying!

As it turns out, Platt and Galvin were friends for five years before they started dating, putting paid to my Dear Evan Hansen meet-cute narrative (yet making their bond all the stronger, most likely, because we all know the best relationships are the ones where you’re friends first—Look at Ross and Rachel!). The two spent quarantine together with Platt’s parents in his childhood home, which is quite literally the best relationship stress test I can think of, and they still seem to be in love, so hats off!

There’s so much to love about Platt and Galvin as a couple, but I simply plotzed when I saw them appear together at the 2022 Grammys—Platt in a black tux and frilled shirt, Galvin in a gray blazer and shorts with a shirt featuring a photo of the divine Barbra Streisand. More queer couples coordinating outfits and showing up at awards shows hand in hand while taking the time to sartorially honor musical-theater legends, please! Be gay, do crimes, wear shorts, make out, et cetera.
