I-T dept recovers Rs 11 cr from Trinamool MLA’s house, factory

The Income Tax department has recovered Rs 11 crore from the residence, factory and rice mill of former minister and Trinamool legislator from Jangipur constituency Jakir Hossain in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district on Thursday, following a marathon raid and search operations starting from January 11 which lasted till early Thursday morning.

“I am an industrialist and I need to keep cash at home, Payments are only accepted in cash by the farmers. We also need to pay for different things as part of my business. The money recovered by the IT department also includes money of my wife and daughter. The IT officials refused to listen to me. It is very difficult to do business like this,” Hossain said, after the recovery by the IT Department.

“I have been a honest tax-payer for the last 23 years,” Hossain said.

The Income Tax department sources said that Rs 9 crore was recovered from Hossain’s residence alone, while Rs 2 crore have been recovered from a Bidi (local Indian smoking stick) factory and a rice mill owned by him. Hossain, Hossain is a Trinamool Congress MLA and a former minister West Bengal cabinet.

The Income Tax department sleuths conducted the marathon search operations accompanied by the central armed forces personnel.

“I have co-operated with the IT department. The IT officials did not give me time or even inform me before coming. I am a businessman and an elected public representative. This is sheer harassment to me,” Hossain said.

Meanwhile, political slugfest over the issues started. Trinamool Congress’s Rajya Sabha member, Dr Santanu Sen, claimed that the central agencies are deliberately targeting the Trinamool Congress leaders and maligning them.BJP state spokesperson Samik Bhattacharya claimed that cash recovery from the residence of Trinamool Congress leaders in Bengal is becoming a new feature in the state.
