“I Knew It Was the One”: Margot Robbie On Getting Ready for the 2023 Met Gala

Margot Robbie was one of the many guests at this year’s Met Gala who wore black, but her gown boasted a special historical significance.

The theme of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s annual extravaganza, one that asked guests to come dressed “in honor of Karl Lagerfeld” to celebrate the Costume Institute’s newest exhibition, “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty”, saw attendees draw from various sources of inspiration. Present were the details that Lagerfeld included so often in his designs at Chloé, Fendi and especially Chanel, from chains and ribbons to Chanel’s signature camellias. Attendees also nodded to elements of Lagerfeld’s distinctive, monochrome uniform: sunglasses, ties and fingerless motorcycle gloves.

That the 32-year-old Robbie therefore, a longtime ambassador of Chanel, would attend the Met Gala in a piece from the house archives was somewhat inevitable. She chose a black silk chiffon gown with plastic and gold chain detailing at the waist, first worn by Cindy Crawford as part of Chanel’s haute couture spring 1993 collection. Stylist Andrew Mukamal accessorized the look simply: no necklace, just diamonds on the ears and fingers.

It was an elegance that was echoed in Robbie’s beauty look, which came courtesy of make-up artist Pati Dubroff. “My inspiration for tonight’s look is clean, glowy, fresh and heightened perfection,” explained Dubroff to Vogue as Robbie was getting ready. “I wanted to achieve a shine to mimic her Chanel dress.”

Robbie’s hairstylist Bryce Scarlett also kept the actor’s ’do minimal, opting for slightly side-swept Old Hollywood waves.

Ahead of the Met Gala, we sat down with Robbie to discuss the inspiration behind her look, and how Lagerfeld continues to influence Virginie Viard’s approach at Chanel. Below, our conversation.
