Hurricane tracker: Tropical storm Bret may form as Atlantic experiences record-breaking warmth

The tropical Atlantic Ocean is currently experiencing record-breaking warm temperatures which may lead to unexpected start of hurricane season. A tropical disturbance, located 1,000 miles west of Africa’s coast, is expected to organize and has a high probability of developing into storm ‘Bret’ within the next 48-72 hours. This early formation is occurring approximately two months ahead of the usual schedule for this region, according to reports.

The National Hurricane Center has estimated that the current system, named Invest 92L, has an 80 percent chance of formation within the next 48 hours and a 90 per cent chance by the end of the week. If it becomes a tropical storm, it will be named Bret and become the third storm of the year.

As per initial forecasts for the 2023 hurricane season, a slightly below-average season due to the emergence of an El Niño weather pattern was predicted, however, the warm ocean waters have led most forecasting agencies to revise their predictions to an average or even above-average season.

Weather models indicate that the system will likely drift westward, with its path dependent on its rate of strengthening. If the thunderstorms intensify rapidly, the storm will be influenced by high-altitude winds, causing it to curve away from the Lesser Antilles, however, if it develops more slowly, it will continue westward, posing potential concerns for the Lesser Antilles later in the week.

Most computer models project the system to become a tropical storm by Monday night or Tuesday and potentially reach Category 1 or 2 hurricane strength between Wednesday and Friday.
