Carlos Corberan needs to find a quick fix to West Brom’s troubles on the road if their unlikely bid to squeeze into the Championship play-offs isn’t to fall flat.
They were left wondering how they failed to seal a victory that would have put them just three points off the top six after a woeful display in front of goal saw them slip to a fifth straight away defeat.
Hull claimed a first win in five to cement their place in mid-table thanks to Benjamin Tetteh belatedly opening his account in addition to a second half own goal from defender Dara O’Shea.
Liam Rosenior had demanded an improvement after Hull’s defeat at Bristol City and he got it, but only after making a crucial early tactical shift.
Albion pushed them back from the first whistle and it took a stand-out display from Karl Darlow to keep Corberan’s men at bay with saves from Daryl Dike, Marc Albrighton and Jed Wallace.

When the Newcastle loan keeper was finally beaten on his home debut, the post came to his rescue from John Swift’s curling 25-yard free-kick late on.
It took Hull more than 30 minutes to muster a threat on goal but it was well worth the wait thanks to a stunning finish from Tetteh put his side ahead after a formation tweak by Rosenior to push Regan Slater further forward during an early injury break.
The big Ghana forward knocked down a long ball forward before swapping passes in the box with Slater.
With his back to goal there was still plenty to do but as in one fluid movement Tetteh spun and fired into the top corner from a narrow angle for his first goal in an injury- hit first season following his move from Turkey.
Tetteh forced Josh Griffiths into a fine near post save early in the second half and from the resulting corner O’Shea, under pressure from Sean McLoughlin, diverted the ball into his own net at the near post to seal the outcome.
