The company revealed in a blog post that the latest version of its app will enable users to register for a Telegram account without a SIM card. For that, users will need to purchase a “blockchain-based anonymous number” from the decentralised platform called Fragment, which is also founded by the owner of Telegram, Pavel Durov.
It is important to note that the Fragment only sells usernames and anonymous numbers compatible with the Telegram app and web services. Additionally, payments on the Fragment are made using the official token of Telegram called The Open Network (TON). Telegram users can buy an anonymous number for $16 or 9 TON. Once the number has been purchased, users can access it by completing an OTP verification process. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you move further with the Telegram sign-up without a SIM card:
- Download the latest version of the Telegram app from the Google Play Store or
Apple App Store on yourAndroid or iOS device, respectively. - Then, open the Telegram app on your smartphone.
- Tap on the Get Started button.
- Enter the blockchain-based anonymous number you just purchased from Fragment.
- Then, enter the OTP you received on your blockchain-based anonymous number and validate it.
- Now, you are ready to use the Telegram app without a SIM card.
