How to clean your face and hair after playing Holi – Times of India
Taking precautionary measures are important, both due to the pandemic, and due to Holi colours’ exposure, as sometimes the colours may not be the easiest to remove off ourselves!
While you can prep your skin and hair before going out to play Holi, and use some common tips like slathering moisturisers and sunscreen on your face and body, and oiling your hair, and tying it up in a bun, or even wearing a cap to cover your hair, colour still penetrates onto you. And removing that colour can be a daunting task, especially since the Holi colours can be both stubborn to remove, and can also cause damage to your skin.
Dr. Manasi Shirolikar, a consultant dermatologist, MBBS, DDVL shares how to clean your face and hair after playing Holi
1. Been exposed to oil based Holi colours? It would be best if you used a cleansing balm or a cleansing oil to remove the colours from your face (and body too). Double cleansing is a great method to remove the colour off you, without causing irritation or damaging your skin barrier. Follow this up with your face wash, and mild body cleanser. To remove these colours from your hair, use a deep cleansing, clarifying shampoo, and immediately follow it up with deep conditioning.
2. If you have only played Holi with dry colours, or are lucky to only be covered up in dry colours, first gently dust the colours away from your hair, face and body. Following this, at least for your face, use a face wash, instead of using soaps. For your hair, opt for a mild cleansing shampoo to remove the colour, and for your body, use a gentle, pH balanced soap that will not cause any irritations.
3. You may be tempted to use a scrub, a peel or even exfoliate your skin to remove a colour – please do not do so. This could lead to an irritant reaction, which could cause rashes. Use a gentle cleanser instead, and avoid scrubbing at all costs.
4. Holi colours tend to dry hair out, so it is very important to use a hydrating hair mask after you have shampooed and conditioned your hair. In fact, continue to do so at least twice a week, till your hair is restored back to its normal texture.
5. Even though the Internet is filled with options, do not attempt to use a DIY or a quick fix to remove the colour from your hair, face or skin, as you can cause more harm than good – these could react with the colour, thus leading to a lot of damage. Continue to use your regular facewash Moisturiser and Sunscreen but skip actives for a few days before and after Holi.
6. After your shower, apply a nice thick layer of moisturiser to your face and skin, and a leave-in conditioner, treatment or serum to hydrate your hair.
7. Use soothing ingredients such as centella asiatica, aloe vera, calendula, niacinamide, or ceramides to soothe your skin, and bring it at ease after exposing it to some harsh colours.
If you do follow these tips, you will easily be able to wash off any and every Holi colour from yourself, without any damage. If, however, irritation persists – visit your nearest Dermatologist!
So go on, go out there, have the best Holi ever, while also saving your face, skin and hair from all sorts of damage.
