Reliance Jio signalled its intentions about going big with the 5G rollout in India. Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani at the company’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) announced that around Diwali — sometime in October — the rollout of 5G services will take place in key cities. By 2023, Reliance Jio has an ambitious plan to launch nationwide 5G services. Ambani also spoke about how the company is collaborating with global tech giants for 5G services and more in the country. Here is how Reliance Jio is working with some of the biggest tech names in the world:
Google: For “ultra-affordable” 5G phones and more
Mukesh Ambani, in his address at the AGM, revealed that the company “is working with Google to develop ultra-affordable 5G smartphones for India.” Reliance Jio and Google last year launched their first smartphone and it will be interesting to see which other devices are in the offing. The collaboration between the two companies isn’t restricted to hardware/software. Ambani also said that Reliance Jio will “leverage the advanced capabilities of Google Cloud to offer Jio’s Private 5G stack and other 5G-enabled solutions to both domestic and global users at scale.”
Intel: For Jio’s cloud-scale data centres
Reliance Jio is working with Intel on “technologies used in Jio’s cloud-scale data centres and 5G Edge locations”. Not just that Intel’s tech is being used by Jio in infrastructure for Artificial Intelligence-based apps and services.
Qualcomm: Jio’s newest partner for 5G solutions
With Qualcomm, according to Reliance Jio, the company is working to develop 5G solutions for India, which can also be taken to the rest of the world. Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon said “I’m excited to be working together on cloud-native, scalable, and flexible 5G infrastructure, in both mmWave and sub-6GHz, to develop an ecosystem that can extend beyond India.”
Microsoft: For cloud-based business apps and Azure
Azure is Microsoft’s cloud computing services business and Reliance Jio is collaborating with the company. “We are partnering with Microsoft to expand the Azure ecosystem in India, and to develop a vibrant ecosystem of cloud-enabled business applications and solutions, especially for small and medium businesses,” said Ambani at the 45th Reliance AGM.
