How Doja Cat Painted Her Face—and Head—for Vogue World Last Night
Around a month ago, Grammy-winning rapper Doja Cat unveiled her latest hairstyle: a closely shaved head. The new look prompted a fair amount of sexist attacks, prompting the singer to tell her critics that she was unconcerned with their opinions (in more colorful language). But the “Woman” singer is not letting naysayers dim her shine. She’s masterfully using New York Fashion Week events as a platform to debut a full-fledged new aesthetic, with her new haircut as a focal point.
Doja has taken to wearing considerably more punk and experimental looks, akin to the playful, DIY style of a fashion school student. At the street fair and runway event Vogue World, which took place last night, the musician leaned into avant-garde makeup, covering her head and face in a white geometrical pattern. The look felt bold and decisive, pushing up against outdated ideas of what a pop star should look like. If you get it, you get it.
“It has influenced my style in an interesting way,” Doja says of her new ‘do. She says her look has taken on more of “an industrial vibe, and I have really been able to stretch my love for makeup.”
This new “vibe” is partly thanks to Brett Alan Nelson, Doja’s stylist. For her appearance at Marni’s spring 2023 presentation, where she sat next to Madonna, Doja donned a tight-fitting, acid wash-eque Marni dress with a lewd graphic tee underneath. Later that same night, Doja hopped on over to the Heaven by Marc Jacobs party in Bushwick, changing into fish nets, high-rise shorts, and painted on eyebrows. “I would love to see the graphic eyebrow art take off,” Doja Cat says. Another standout look from her week was an extreme power suit complete with protruding shoulders.
And what about that tee she wore to the Marni fall 2022 show, which read “I’d rather be eating ass”?
“The shirt rings true. I wouldn’t wear something that says something I don’t believe in,” she says. “Everyone loves an iconic T-shirt, and thank God for the designer Edna St Louis. She made some cute little kettlebell earrings that I love, and I am for sure buying five more of those T-shirts.”
Below, check out how Doja Cat got ready for the Vogue World extravaganza and then the after-party at Boom Boom Room last night.
