How Alton Mason Channeled Little Richard at the Cannes Premiere of Elvis

Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis screening in Cannes last night was one of the festival’s most-anticipated events, and as such, the red carpet was a full-on spectacle. Stars like Tom Hanks, Austin Butler, and Olivia DeJone hit the step and repeat alongside Priscilla Presley. One of the best-dressed cast mates on the scene? That would be Alton Mason, who portrays Little Richard in the film. “What I love about Little Richard is how multi-hyphenate and complex he is,” Mason tells Vogue of his standout role. “Little Richard was made to be loved, not understood. He was sexy, loud, intelligent, electric, rock and roll—and being able to embody some of those essences was an honor for me.”

A model and filmmaker who’s now forayed into acting, Mason’s appearance at Cannes last night marked his second time attending the festival, but the first time he’s attended for his own film screening. “I’m on a cloud—it felt like a dream,” says Mason. “It felt powerful being able to walk and join my cast and crew.” He needed to do the milestone justice with his look—so he channeled his iconic screen character in a slick jumpsuit by Pressiat. “It’s a French brand based in Paris, and I’m obsessed with them,” says Mason. “With it being a French designer, it felt right for Cannes.”

The star felt that the dapper look’s unconventional approach to suiting, with a dash of showmanship and 1950s flair, properly paid homage to Little Richard, who was known for his theatrical, gender-bending stage fashions. “I love big, structured shoulders and a cinched waist,” says Mason of the look. “And the shirt had a really big collar with French cuffs. It made me feel real Scarface—real gaudy.” Throughout his press tour for the film, Mason has consistently been using fashion to pay homage to the architect of rock and roll. “From the style to the makeup, I definitely incorporated his essences into the looks,” he says. “For the Met Gala, I wanted to honor his eyeliner and capes.” (He wore an embellished Prada creation.)

Now that Mason’s Cannes cameo is over, the star will now be engaging in a little bit of R&R. “I’m leaving tomorrow to celebrate with my brother in Capri,” he says. “I’m looking forward to] just being surrounded by love, and having an amazing experience.” After totally shutting down the red carpet, we can safely say he deserves the vacation.
