‘History has been scripted!’ PM Modi lauds Neeraj Chopra on Olympic gold medal

Neeraj Chopra won the first gold medal for India in javelin throw on Saturday. The Indian athlete topped the charts with a distance of 87.58 metres, beating season bests of the three competitors who finished below him. He also pushed India’s Olympics medal tally to the highest ever, after wrestler Bajrang Punia matched it with the previous high of six medals.

Congratulating Chopra on this feat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, “History has been scripted at Tokyo! What Neeraj Chopra has achieved today will be remembered forever. The young Neeraj has done exceptionally well. He played with remarkable passion and showed unparalleled grit. Congratulations to him for winning the Gold.”

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor wrote on Twitter, “Neeraj Chopra, who held on to the top spot since the beginning of the first round, has brought India their first ever post-independence athletics Olympics medal ever! Finally India has an entry in the Gold Medal category. Congratulations Neeraj Chopra! India is so proud of you!”

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh also congratulated Chopra on winning the first gold medal for India at Tokyo Olympics. “Gold! Neeraj Chopra…you have created history and made the whole country proud. Your 87.58 m winning throw today will be part of the legends of the Track and Field arena. India owes you! Jai Hind.”

With this, you took India to its highest ever medal tally at the Olympics. You will inspire generations,” wrote Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.

Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar said that Chopra will be given 6 crore and a Class I category job as per the state government’s policy. “We will be building a Centre of Excellence for athletes in Panchkula, where he will be the head if he wants. He will be given a plot with 50 per cent concession, like other players,” he added Haryana CM ML Khattar.

Abihnav Bindra, former Olympian and gold medal winner in 2008 Olympics Games in 10-metre air rifle, penned a heartfelt letter to Chopra, congratulating him on this glorious occasion.

“The impact your victory will create on promoting your sport amongst the country’s youth is immeasurable,” Bindra wrote. “Also, welcome to the club. It is not most happening of the places yet and needs more members, but I feel your entry is going to pave the way for many more deserving athletes.”
