Nitu Ghanghas, who made it to the Commonwealth Games after defeating ace pugilist Mary Com in the trials, has justified her selection as she has bagged the gold medal for the country in the 48-kg weight category.

Nitu, 21, resident of Dhanana village defeated Demie-Jade Resztan of England with 5-0 scoreline to win the first gold medal in boxing today.

Her family members and villagers remained glued to the TV when the bout started this evening. Celebrations broke out with every hook and punch she threw on her opponent. The initial trend of the bout made it clear that Nitu was set to dominate the match and would get the gold medal, said Kamal Pradhan, president of the Bhiwani Boxing Club in Bhiwani.

“Nitu is a talented player. She had cherished the dream of becoming a boxer since childhood. With the Commonwealth games, she has gained confidence and will start preparing for the Asian Games and then the Olympics,” Pradhan said, who has been her mentor in the boxing club.

Nitu’s father Jai Bhagwan and mother Mukesh distributed sweets in the village on her success while stating that her achievement would definitely instil confidence among girls in society.
