Hindu Sena files writ petition in Delhi High Court against ‘Adipurush’

The Hindu Sena, led by its national president Vishnu Gupta, filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) on Friday in the Delhi High Court against the film ‘Adipurush’. The writ petition calls for the film to not be certified for public exhibition.

In the petition submitted to the Delhi High Court, Gupta stated that the petition is a writ petition in the form of public interest litigation under Article 226 of the Indian Constitution. It requests the court to issue a writ of direction to the respondents, urging them to remove objectionable scenes depicting religious leaders, characters, and figures in a derogatory manner. The petition also seeks a writ of mandamus to the respondents, directing them not to certify the feature film ‘Adipurush’ for public exhibition.

“ADIPURUSH directed by Om Raut which has hurt the sentiments of the Hindu community by depicting the religious leaders/characters/figures in an inaccurate and inappropriate manner contrary to the description of Hindu religious leaders/characters as described in Ramayana authored by writers like Maharishi Valmiki, Saint Tulsidas etc.,” the petition said.

The petition alleges that the film has hurt the sentiments of the Hindu community by inaccurately and inappropriately portraying religious leaders, characters, and figures. It argues that the depiction of Ravana, Lord Ram, Mata Sita, and Hanuman in the film is contrary to their portrayal as described in the Ramayana authored by writers such as Maharishi Valmiki and Saint Tulsidas’ Ramcharitmanas.

The petitioner claims to have previously submitted a representation on October 4, 2022, to the Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting regarding the matter. However, no response has been received to date.

The PIL has been filed on behalf of the public, especially those who may not have the means or legal knowledge to approach the court themselves.

Directed by Om Raut and produced by Bhushan Kumar, ‘Adipurush’ is based on the Hindu epic Ramayana. The film stars Prabhas as Lord Ram, Kriti Sanon as Sita, Sunny Singh as Lakshman, and Saif Ali Khan as Ravana. The film has generated significant attention and anticipation among fans.
