Heatwave: Patna DM orders to shut schools till 24 June
Bihar heatwaves: Patna District Administration on 17 June has extended the closure of schools up to Class 12 till 24 June due to prevalent heat wave in Bihar. Earlier, it had restricted all academic activities from June 12 to June 18.
In an official circular, Patna’s district magistrate Dr Chandra Shekhar Singh wrote, “Whereas, it has been made to appear to me due to prevalent heat wave and prevailing high temperature in the district, health and life of children are at risk”.
The notification added, “Under section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973, do hereby prohibit the academic activities of all private, government schools (including pre-school and Anganwadi centre) of Patna district up to class 16 till 24 June 2023”.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red and orange alerts for some districts for the next two days. Earlier on Tuesday, the IMD issued an orange alert for the next five days.
While speaking to ANI, IMD scientist Naresh Kumar said, “In Delhi, Punjab and Haryana, the temperature may reach near 40-45 in the coming days. The heat wave is continuing in Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. An orange alert has been issued in these parts for the coming five days.”
In Jharkhand, the weather department has said that there won’t be any relief from the scorching heat for at least the next three-four days. The department on Friday issued a heat wave red alert for East and West Singhbhum districts, orange alert for Saraikela-Kharswan and Simdega districts and yellow alert for other districts till Saturday, a weather official said.
In-charge of Ranchi Meteorological Centre, Abhishek Anand, said, “There won’t be any respite from the extreme heat or heat wave for at least three-four days. Thereafter, temperature may dip by two to three degrees. Light to moderate rains are likely in some parts of the state till June 20.”
As per IMD, heat wave to severe heat wave conditions is likely to continue over East India and central India during next 3 days and abate thereafter.
In its weather forecast, IMD said, heat wave to Severe heat wave conditions is very likely to continue in isolated pockets over Odisha, Vidarbha during next 5 days; Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand during next 4 days, Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam, East Madhya Pradesh, East Uttar Pradesh, Bihar during next 3 days; West Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, Rayalaseema and Tamil Nadu during next 2 days.”
