Hayley Matthews’ all-round show gives West Indies series win

Hayley Matthews’ all-round show gave West Indies Women an unassailable 2-0 lead as the visitors beat Pakistan Women by 37 runs in the second ODI in Karachi.

Chasing 154, Pakistan were 111 for 5 at one stage but lost their last five wickets for just five runs, to be bowled out in 39.2 overs. Matthews was the most successful bowler for West Indies, picking up 4 for 26 with her offspin.

Like in the first ODI, Pakistan opted to field after winning the toss. Unlike in the first ODI though, the decision seemed to work in their favour as medium-pacer Fatima Sana dismissed Rashada Williams and Kyshona Knight cheaply to have West Indies 31 for 2 in the 12th over.

Deandra Dottin and captain Stafanie Taylor tried to stabilise the innings by adding 33 for the third wicket before Dottin was run out for 34. Taylor, Matthews and Shemaine Campbelle all scored useful 20s but none of them could reach 30 as the Pakistan bowlers kept striking at regular intervals.

Omaima Sohail and Anam Amin took care of the lower order as West Indies slipped from 143 for 5 to 153 all out, with Kycia Knight retiring hurt for 19.

Muneeba Ali and Sidra Ameen started the chase in a sedate manner; at the end of the powerplay, Pakistan were 24 for no loss. However, they could add only three more before Shakera Selman had Muneeba caught behind in the 13th over. Ameen fell soon after, lbw to Matthews for 11, leaving Pakistan 39 for 2.

Javeria Khan and Sohail took the side past 50 before the former was run out for 24. In the next over, Matthews removed Iram Javed to make it 75 for 4. And when Anisa Mohammed sent back Aliya Riaz, all Pakistan’s hopes hinged on Sohail.

Sohail found an ally in Sana and the two added 31 for the sixth wicket. They had brought it down to 43 required from 56 balls when Matthews castled Sana for her third wicket. From the other end, Shamilia Connell bowled both Sohail and Nashra Sandhu in the space of three balls to all but seal the game.
