Has Aamir Khan walked out of ‘Champions’? – Exclusive – Times of India

Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan had maintained the air of enigma around the remake of the 2008 Spanish film ‘Champions’ despite the media making several attempts to get a concrete answer from him. When asked if he’s remaking the Spanish director Javier Fesser, ‘Champions’, Aamir was firstly pleasantly surprised as to how the information had leaked to the mediapersons. However, he neither denied nor confirmed remaking it.

‘Champions’, won three Goya Awards (considered to be the Spanish equivalent of Academy Awards) as the Best Film, Best New Actor and Best Original Song and was also chosen as Spain’s official entry for Best Foreign Film at the 91st Academy Awards. But it did not secure the nomination in the prestigious Awards ceremony. The film in question was heavily inspired by the Aderes basketball team in Burjassot (Valencia), a team created with people with intellectual disabilities that won 12 Spanish championships between 1999-2014.

It was also learned that the remake of ‘Champions’ will be directed by RS Prasanna. We now hear that Aamir has had second thoughts about the film and is not doing it. He has informed Prasanna and even told him that he can help him out by referring it to other actors.

Aamir is back from his US holiday, but there’s no sign of Prasanna’s film which was supposed to go on floors in September in Mumbai’s Film City.

When contacted, Prasanna did not deny the development. He told ETimes, “Yes, we were supposed to start it in September but there has been a delay. Apart from that, it would only be right if Aamir talks on this.”

A source close to the actor subsequently told us that there is a certain development but they are still involved with ‘Champoions’, without hoeever specifying the involvment in what capacity.

Aamir was last seen in ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ that also starred Kareena Kapoor Khan, Mona Singh and Naga Chaitanya in pivotal roles.
