Gujarat elections: Father-son poll clash avoided, Mahesh Vasava withdraws from Jhagadia seat

In order to avoid a contest with his father Mahesh Vasava, son of Bharatiya Tribal Party (BTP) founder Chhotu Vasava, on Thursday withdrew his nomination from the Jhagadia Assembly constituency in Bharuch district.

Earlier, BTP declared Mahesh Vasava as the official candidate from the seat. Jhagadia will vote on December 1 in the first phase.

Junior Vasava, the sitting MLA from Dediapada, said he will campaign for his father and ensure he wins by a big margin.

Chhotu Vasava is the sitting MLA from Jhagadia and has won the seat seven times.
Senior Vasava had filed his nomination as an independent candidate, creating the possibility of a fight between the father-son duo.

On the last date for withdrawal of candidature (November 17), the junior Vasava withdrew his nomination

Mahesh Vasava said, “We will have to stay united against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) which has ruled the state for 27 years…I will do everything to defeat the BJP and the Congress,”

He added, “I will continue to support the struggle of the messiah, the icon of the poor (Chhotu Vasava). After taking the opinion of my workers, we made a decision (of his withdrawal from race) to make sure he wins by a huge margin.”

In 2017 election, BTP contested three seats in an alliance with the Congress out of which it won two. The two BTP seats are Jhagadia and Dediapada.

In June 2020 Rajya Sabha election in Gujarat, The father-son duo abstained from voting.

Later, they broke poll ties with the Congress in two Panchayat bodies in Narmada and Bharuch.

In May, the BTP supremo entered into a pre-poll alliance with the AAP and held a joint rally with Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in Bharuch.

However, the tribal party pulled out of it.
