Grim warning after tornado shreds homes

More wild weather is in store for Australia’s east after a surprise tornado ripped through regional towns carving a trail of destruction.

East coast Australians have been warned they’re in for more wild weather after a tornado ripped through homes in regional NSW.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe thunderstorm warning in Queensland affecting people in the Central Highlands, Coalfields and Capricornia forecast districts.

A map on the Bureau’s website shows a danger zone centred around the rural town of Emerald.

The 5am warning said thunderstorms have strengthened near Emerald, and that they’re likely to continue to move east.

“Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce damaging winds and large hailstones in the warning area over the next several hours,” the warning said.

“Locations which may be affected include Emerald, Clermont, Blackwater, Rolleston, Baralaba and Springsure.”

People in the area should move their cars from under trees, secure loose items outdoors, and seek shelter indoors.

Telephone use should be avoided during thunderstorms.

Marine wind warnings are also in place across the entire east, from Queensland and NSW to Tasmania, Victoria and South Australia.

The warnings on Friday come after a regional NSW town was surprised by a large tornado that ripped through houses and destroyed trees in Bathurst.

Three residents were injured in the wild weather, which tore a path of destruction in the Central West towns of Meadow Flat and Clear Creek.

Emergency services were called about 1.55pm to reports a house had been destroyed by a tornado on Curly Dick Road, Meadow Flat.

Paramedics assessed a man, believed to be aged in his 40s, for an injury to his arm. He was transported to Orange Hospital in a stable condition.

Paramedics responded about 15 minutes later to reports of storm damage to a house on Limekilns Road, Clear Creek.

They assessed two patients, a man who had suffered cuts to the face and was treated at the scene, and a woman who had suffered back and neck injuries who was taken to Bathurst Hospital in a stable condition.

NSW Ambulance Inspector Meah Ferguson said the Meadow Flat man was lucky to have escaped with relatively minor injuries.

“It’s not every day you get called out to a tornado and this one packed quite a punch,” he said.

“When we arrived on scene we found extensive damage to the patient‘s dwelling and surrounding areas.”
