Gregg Berhalter names his USMNT squad for final pre-World Cup matches against Japan and Saudi Arabia
Gregg Berhalter names his USMNT squad for the final pre-World Cup warm-up matches against Japan and Saudi Arabia, with Josh Sargent, Malik Tillman and Ricardo Pepi all in… but there’s no place for Jordan Pefok despite his Bundesliga goals
USMNT coach Gregg Berhalter has named a 26-man squad for the team’s September friendlies, with strikers Ricardo Pepi and Josh Sargent brought back into the fold and three Scotland-based players getting the nod as well.
Pepi played a significant role in World Cup qualifying, with three goals in eight starts, but has endured a brutal dry spell after his move to German club Augsburg (and subsequent loan move to Groningen), nearing a year without a goal.
Sargent, too, struggled to score much for an eventually relegated Norwich City last season, but he’s returned to form in the Championship with five goals already this year.
Also called in are Rangers’ Malik Tillman and James Sands, as well as Celtic’s Cameron Carter-Vickers.
But there’s no room for Union Berlin’s Jordan Pefok, despite his promising start to life in the Bundesliga.
The striker has two goals and three assists to start the season, and impressed both domestically and in Europe last season for Switzerland’s Young Boys.
Elsewhere, Fulham full-back Antonee Robinson has missed out through injury, with the same being true of winger Tim Weah.
The USMNT will play Japan and Saudi Arabia in this international window in the squad’s final tune-up before the World Cup.
