Graham Potter insists opposition digs over Chelsea’s spending don’t bother him

Graham Potter has spoken out on Chelsea’s record-breaking spending under cash-happy American owner Todd Boehly and insists opposition comments about the club’s activity from opposition managers doesn’t bother him.

The Englishman has previously maintained an open and honest approach when dealing with the media and appears keen to address questions over Chelsea’s transfer activity.

The struggling Blues spent over £320m in the January transfer window, making their total spend under Boehly since his summer takeover push in excess of £600m.

Despite being 9th in the Premier League standings amid a season of struggles, a seemingly confident Potter told Chelsea’s official website:  ‘We’ve spent the money we’ve spent. The media aren’t going to let that go under the radar. 

‘All of football will be singing that song, that’s for sure. Everybody is entitled to their opinion. There’s free speech, which is good. I don’t worry about that.

‘Envy isn’t a good quality to have. I’ve never been envious of anybody. I’ve tried to work and do the best I can in the circumstances I have.

‘You’re best to compare to yourself rather than somebody else because you don’t know the context or the situation. I also understand that’s the world we’re in, and that’s fine by me.

‘Most managers would love to be in my position,’ he added.

Chelsea’s recruitment strategy under the watch of their new owner has seen the club bring in a series of highly sought after talents, but have had to pay a premium to land their targets.

Argentina World Cup winning midfielder Enzo Fernandez’s £107m arrival from Benfica broke the English transfer record, while Mykhailo Mudryk’s transfer to the Premier League side cost them a further £88m.

However, Potters position as first-team boss has come under increasing scrutiny in recent weeks with Chelsea enduring one of their worst top-flight seasons on record.
