Govt-owned coops reduce tomato price by 10 to 80/kg – Times of India

NEW DELHI: The Centre on Sunday slashed the price of tomatoes sold by government-owned cooperatives — NCCF and NAFED — to Rs 80 a kg against the earlier price of Rs 90. The price was brought down as the government’s market intervention to offer the key kitchen item at discounted price has brought down rates in wholesale and retail markets in Delhi and NCR by Rs 30-35 a kg.
The consumer affairs ministry officials said more vans selling tomatoes will be deployed in the national capital, its suburbs and other major cities across the country.
Union consumer affairs secretary Rohit Kumar Singh said, “There has been a decrease in the wholesale prices of tomatoes due to the intervention of the government to sell it at concessional rate at several locations in the country where the prices were ruling exceptionally high…Government of India is committed to provide relief to the consumers.”
Sources in the NCCF said in the past three days nearly 50 tonnes of tomato has been sold in Delhi and NCR. They added that the exercise will continue till prices get normalised.
The consumer affairs ministry said besides the NCR, tomatoes at discounted price were being made available in Lucknow, Kanpur, Varanasi, Patna, Muzaffarpur and Arrah.
The tomato prices have spiked because of supply disruption caused due to the monsoon. The NCCF and NAFEd are procuring tomatoes from Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra.
The average cost of tomato landing in Delhi is around Rs 121-122 per kg. The government utilising the Price Stabilisation Fund to make the commodity available at discounted price.
