Govt may talk e-gaming rules with companies on Tuesday
Senior officials from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology are likely to meet top executives from gaming companies to discuss the role and structure of the proposed self-regulatory organisation (SRO), the mandatory know-your-customer (KYC) requirement norms for gamers and other proposals, sources said.
Last week, the IT ministry had kickstarted public consultations with stakeholders by meeting associations of schools, parents, and teachers to discuss the draft rules.
Sources said the parents’ and teachers’ associations present at the meeting raised concerns about the gaming companies taking over and completely controlling the policy decisions made by SROs.
The stakeholders also suggested the idea of capping the number of hours that a child should be allowed to play daily.
The minister of state for electronics and information technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar assured stakeholders that the gaming companies would not be allowed to control or dictate the narrative at SROs and that such a panel would have adequate representation from all stakeholders.

In the draft rules released on January 2, the IT ministry had proposed a self-regulatory body for the online gaming industry. The body would be responsible for certifying games and would also be responsible to ensure that the online games which operate in India follow rules and regulations. Apart from the SRO, the IT ministry had also proposed a mandatory KYC verification of online gamers.
The draft rules also require gaming companies and intermediaries to appoint a grievance redressal officer, a nodal contact person and a chief compliance officer along with having a physical office in India.
