Google could introduce a new audio feature to Meet called “binaural audio” or “stereo separation”, as per a report by 9To5Google, based on some strings of code. The feature is said to improve the sound quality of Google Meet.
Stereo separation works by providing different audio channels for people speaking in a live meeting and sending them separately into the left and right speaker of the listener. Usually, in a virtual meeting with calling apps, mono audio channels are used which means everyone’s voice comes through the same speaker. Hence, with stereo separation, the sound quality and recognising the speaker in Google Meet calls are going to be better, with the voice of each participant coming out clearer than in mono audio channel setting and the listener being able to identify the speaker more easily.
“Google Duo version 169 is rolling out now via the Play Store, and in it, we find that the app is preparing a new feature that it calls “binaural audio” or “stereo separation.” These same strings also appear in the latest release of Gmail, suggesting that stereo separation is coming to Google Meet first.”, said the report.
Google is also going to introduce some features of Duo into Meet for now. You could soon have one-on-one calls on the Meet app the same way as it can be done on Duo.
