Home app is Google’s one-stop solution for everything related to the smart home. The app has received a couple of updates, changes and features over the years since its launch. The most recent update is the Material Design update in 2019. Today, alongside the Nest devices, Google has also announced another huge overhaul to the app with new design updates and more.
Google Home app update brings more customisation options
The updated Google Home app brings a major design overhaul. The company has introduced some changes which put the design of the app in line with Android 12 and Android 13’s Material design. The most noticeable change is the introduction of a new tabbed design which includes Favourites, Devices, Automations, Activity and Settings.
Google has also introduced Spaces which will arrive next year and it will also allow users to define ‘spaces’ for smart home devices that aren’t physically placed in the same room.
A dedicated Media widget has also been added to the home feed. The new media widget, according to the company, will automatically detect media playback. It will show playback controls, TV controls, etc.
Apart from that Google has moved the Routines to the Automation tab. Functionality-wise nothing much has changed, users can still create triggers to execute multiple devices or a routine like turning on lights, triggering the latest news and more. Google has confirmed that it is working on a script editor for power users and allowing them to create unlimited customised home automation setups. The script editor feature will be rolled out next year.
Matter support has been added to Home app
Google has added Matter support which will enable Fast Pair for smart home devices. Google claims that pairing smart home devices with Matter will be like plug-and-play for users. The Android phone can automatically detect a Matter device and set it up quickly.
Matter support will arrive later this year. Google has confirmed the Matter support that it has started working with top smart home device makers to bring Matter support to a wide range of devices.
