‘Godsend’: Genius remedy for bad sleepers

Imagine you’ve said goodnight, finally found that comfortable position in bed, you’re starting to drift off and your partner begins snoring – loudly. Maybe you don’t need to use your imagination and this is the reality you live through in the name of love.

Well, I can attest to (attempting to) sleep through this struggle as I can barely handle the sound of snoring. I know it can’t always be helped but unluckily for me that doesn’t change the fact that it puts me on edge.

However, now there’s tech to help you, the ‘snoree’, stay sane while sleeping by a ‘snorer’ – meet the BOSE SleepBuds II.

Bose calls their new buds ‘bedtime wearable technology’, which aim to help you relax and fall asleep faster. If you’ve tried everything to escape the sounds of snoring or other audible distractions you’ve probably tried listening to music or relaxation sounds in bed.

I’ve always found that, although this can work, wearing some earphones to bed can make it harder to lay comfortably (especially if you’re a side sleeper). The way earbuds protrude or sit in my ears always creates pressure points in my ears which become sore.

The Bose Sleepbuds II come in a futuristic looking charging case, which reminds me of a sleep pod from a sci-fi movie. Usually I would talk down about a ‘large’ charging case but considering they’ll likely only sit on your bedside table 24/7, rather than in your pocket, I actually like the premium design.

Battery life

The buds have 10 hours of battery life themselves and the case offers an additional 30 hours of battery life with LEDs to indicate approximate battery life.

The buds themselves feel totally different to any earbuds I’ve used – even just holding them in your hand they feel, well, soft. And they’re made so that they sit completely inside your ear so you can lay on your sides and fit snugly so that they won’t fall out.

Can you sleep in them?

When in your ears, initially they feel (and work) like earplugs but minutes later the sensation of putting them in goes away and they’re barely noticeable. They also come with different sized ear tips and a thorough tutorial of how to wear them to assist in finding a comfortable fit. Though they’re not just comfortable, ‘barely there’ ear plugs, these are Bluetooth earphones (with some caveats).

With these buds comes the free Bose Sleep app which has a library of around 35 relaxing noise-masking tracks such as a campfire crackling, relaxing meditation-type music with the sound of waves, rain and so on. The app is simple and easy to navigate and you’re also able to set alarms within the app. I found the provided tracks really relaxing to listen to.

Not only did I test the buds for falling asleep with success but during the day I occasionally used them to block out noisy road works and loud roommates. I think this is because they’re much more comfortable to use than regular earbuds.

The only downside of these buds is that they’re not made for regular use, they’re made with sleeping in mind. This means you can’t just switch to playing podcasts, streaming music or media. Though I can only assume this was a thoughtful choice by Bose to uphold the overall quality of their product, allowing them to offer effective relaxation tracks, giving you a better chance of helping you fall asleep.

Are they worth it?

Personally, I would be hesitant to pick these up for the $379.95 price point without having tried these. However, having given them a test run I can say that they’re everything they’re cracked up to be.

Whether you’re at your wits end with snoring or maybe you even struggle with background noise like tinnitus. If you enjoy relaxation sounds to help you get to sleep then this product could be a godsend for you.
