Global Wind Day 2023: Date, history and significance

It is a day for discovering wind, its power and the possibilities it holds to reshape our energy systems, decarbonise our economies and boost jobs and growth. 

It also provides an opportunity to raise awareness about wind energy, promote its benefits, and encourage the global transition towards clean and renewable sources of power.

Global Wind Day 2023: History

The first Wind Day was organized in 2007 by European Wind Energy Association (EWEA). In 2009, the European Wind Energy Association (WindEurope) and Global Wind Energy Council collaborated to make Wind Day a global event. The day acknowledges the power of the wind and raises awareness about its potential as a sustainable resource. 

The organizers aimed to educate the public, decision-makers, and stakeholders about the advantages of wind energy and its potential to address the challenges of climate change and to achieve our sustainable development goals.

Global Wind Day 2023: Significance

Wind energy is a renewable source of energy that utilizes the power of wind to generate electricity. Unlike fossil fuels, wind energy does not deplete natural resources and has a minimal environmental impact.

Wind energy plays a crucial role in mitigating climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Electricity generated thurogh from wind energy helps to replace fossil fuel-based power generation, which contributes significantly to global carbon dioxide emissions and climate change.

Wind energy promotes sustainable development by providing a clean and reliable source of electricity. It helps to diversify the energy mix, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and enhance energy security.

Today, wind energy is a mature and mainstream technology and one of the fastest growing industrial sectors in the world.

In the EU alone, the wind industry installed more than gas and coal combined last year with enough cumulative installed capacity to meet 15% of the region’s electricity consumption, equivalent to powering 87 million households.
