Glitches mar Day 1 of India Mobile Congress | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Just like millions of mobile subscribers across the country, it was the turn of the telecom industry to be at the receiving end of network glitches, erratic streaming, poor audio, and video freeze.
The fifth edition of the India Mobile Congress – the biggest telecom industry event of the country – saw the online event, organised by Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), open on a jittery note as there were multiple instances of technical glitches and disrupted streaming.
The 3-day event, which had some of the biggest names in the Indian telecom industry as speakers, including Reliance chairman Mukesh Ambani, Airtel chief Sunil Mittal, Vodafone Idea co-promoter Kumar Mangalam Birla and telecom minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, ironically had ‘Connectivity for the Next Decade’ as its theme.
There was even a message from the Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the start of the inaugural session that began around half an hour late, possibly due to last-minute technological challenges, a surprising delay considering most of the speaker-notes were pre-recorded.
Vaishnaw – whose entry into the Union Cabinet had coincided with the ushering in of massive reforms and feel-good doles for the telecom industry – also spoke about the need to improve the quality of services for mobile consumers.
“While the spread of the (telecom) services has really increased, the quality of services is an issue. I would request all the delegates, participants at the IMC, to come up with solutions for improving the quality of service,” Vaishnaw said in his address.
Even the video address of telecom secretary K Rajaraman was abruptly cut short within a few minutes into his speech as the address of junior telecom minister Devusinh Jesingbhai Chauhan was played out without any formal introduction.
Questions sent to COAI on the matter remained unanswered. Quality of telecom services has emerged as a major area of concern for the government as networks become the backbone of the economy as well as for the vast majority of population with education and entertainment also being carried out from the home in the days of Covid restrictions and lockdowns.
