Gary Neville claims Man United midfielder Scott McTominay is ‘naughty’ and ‘lucky’ to not get a red

Scott McTominay was ‘naughty’ and ‘lucky’ to not get sent off for reckless tackle on Cody Gakpo, says Gary Neville… as Jamie Carragher gives the Scotsman ‘benefit of the doubt’

Gary Neville believes Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay was fortunate to not be sent off during his side’s humiliating loss to Liverpool.

Erik ten Hag’s side fell to a heavy 7-0 defeat at Anfield, conceding six goals in a disappointing second-half performance.

But United may feel fortunate to have ended the game with 11-men on the pitch following a reckless tackle by McTominay.

The Scotsman lunged into Coady Gakpo with his studs showing in the 64th minute but managed to get away with just a booking.

Former United defender suggested McTominay knew what he was doing as he said on Sky Sports: ‘He’s naughty and he’s lucky.’

Meanwhile, former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher defended McTominay, insisting the midfielder could not have avoided the follow through in the tackle.

He said: ‘He has followed through but it’s so difficult to change direction. I’d give him the benefit of the doubt there.’

January signing Gakpo opened the scoring with  a curling effort from the edge of the box two minutes before the break.

Darwin Nunez finished off a pouncing Liverpool attack by steering Harvey Elliott’s cross past United shot-stopper David de Gea two minutes into the second-half.

Gakpo bagged his second goal just minutes later before Mohamed Salah got in on the action as well.

Nunez then scored his second goal of the game with another well-taken header in the 75th minute as Roberto Firmino came off the bench to secure a 7-0 Anfield victory for the hosts.

Manchester United capitulated in their heaviest defeat of the season as Liverpool continued their rise up the Premier League table and closed the gap to the Champions League places.
