G20 meet raises hopes of a declaration in Sept’s Leader Summit
He was briefing the media after the two-day sherpa’s meet at Kumarakom.
“Backwaters have put us firmly on course…We are on course to achieve meaningful outcomes,” Kant told reporters.
The earlier major G20 meetings, including the finance ministers and central bank governors meeting in Bengaluru, and the foreign ministers’ meeting in New Delhi, were overshadowed by the sharp differences between the G7 countries and Russia and China over two paragraphs in the declarations.
At both these meetings, only a chair summary and an outcome document were presented.
Russia and China objected to two paragraphs condemning the war that had been included in the Bali G20 summit declaration in November last year.
Terming the meeting as “positive”, “constructive” and “forward-looking”, Kant said India is very hopeful that something will work out in favour of G20.”We have already achieved 99% of the result…We will leave nothing to chance,” he said, highlighting full participation by member countries, new work agenda, and unanimous support for declaration at the Leaders’ Summit as the key takeaways.
He said all members want India’s G20 presidency to be a success and added that the G7 countries want India to put forth an ambitious reform agenda. “We are on the right track,” he added.
The meeting took stock of the progress made in discussions in the various groups under the sherpa track.
The deliberations of the sherpa meetings form the basis of the leaders’ declaration while taking into consideration the outcome documents of various Working Group Meetings.
The outcome document, which is negotiated by the G20 sherpas on behalf of leaders, will be put up to the Leaders at the New Delhi Summit for adoption in September 2023.
India’s key priorities during its presidency include taking forward concerns of developing countries and the need for mobilisation of political momentum for collective actions to take forward the international agenda, especially development and climate goals.
These include green development, climate finance, lifestyle for environment (LiFE), Accelerated, Inclusive & Resilient Growth, Accelerating progress on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Technological Transformation & Digital Public Infrastructure, Multilateral Institutions for the 21st century, and women-led development.
Kant said the Kumarakom meet also focused on discussions in formal settings to take the G20 conversations forward.
