FWICE objects to Pan Nalin’s ‘Chhello Show’ being selected as India’s official entry to Oscars; demands dissolution of jury – Exclusive – Times of India

Days after directed Pan Nalin’s internationally acclaimed film ‘Chhello Show’, titled ‘Last Film Show’ in English, was selected as India’s official entry into the Oscars 2023, the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) has raised objections alleging that it is not an Indian Film.

BN Tiwari, President of FWICE said to ETimes, “The film is not an Indian film and the process of selection is not correct. There were so many Indian films like ‘RRR’ and ‘The Kashmir’ Files but the jury chose a foreign film that has been bought by Siddharth Roy Kapur.”

So what does the FWICE suggest? “We want re-election of the films and the present jury be dissolved. Half of them are there for years and most of them don’t watch the film and voting is done. If ‘Last Film Show’ is sent, it will reflect badly on India which is known to be an industry that makes maximum number of films,” said Tiwari.

Tiwari also said after the press conference that they will be writing to Information and Broadcasting minister Anurag Thakur about the same.

The coming-of-age movie ‘Chhello Show’ which has won critical acclaim around the world, has beaten the likes of SS Rajamouli’s ‘RRR’ and Vivek Agnihotri’s ‘The Kashmir Files’ to become the country’s official contender in the Best Foreign Film category at the upcoming Academy Awards. The Gujarati film is said to be partly an autobiographical drama that follows nine-year-old boy Samay, whose life turns upside down after watching his first movie.

‘Last Film Show’ will go up against other international films like Korea’s ‘Decision to Leave’ and Mexico’s ‘Bardo’ that are already among the favourites to win the top prize.
