From Vaseline to a Krispy Kreme Hat, Here’s What Yara Shahidi Won’t Travel Without

Yara Shahidi admits that she’s a big backpack fan. “As a recent college graduate, backpacks have been a staple for me,” she says. “Freshman year, I’d actually wear two backpacks, on the front and back, I hate to admit.” So, perhaps it’s no surprise that even after college graduation, a black Prada number is the actor’s bag of choice for everything from Coachella concerts to work trips.

So what does she put in its many pockets? In Vogue’s new series, “In the Bag,” we ask celebrities and creatives to share what essentials they travel with. In Shahidi’s case, some are universally sensible—she calls a small tub of Vaseline “my lifesaver”—whereas some are utterly unique to her, like a stack of Cartier thank you notes, for example. “Oftentimes, when I travel, it’s for work and we have these incredible experiences,” Shahidi explains. “We like to keep thank you notes on us.”

She also carries a Christian Dior makeup bag with a number of her beauty essentials. There’s Mielle Peppermint hair oil, a stainless steel gua sha roller, as well as Dr. Barbara Sturm’s hyaluronic serum for darker skin tones. (That product is part of a larger line the German doctor developed along with Angela Bassett: “When Ms. Angela Bassett drops a product, you pay attention,” Shahid says.) The actor also reveals her packing hack: instead of bringing perfume, which often goes over the TSA liquid limit, Shahidi instead opts for smaller containers of essential oils. “Essential oils just always really last: It doesn’t take too much product. You know when people axe body spray the whole place down? That won’t be you,” she jokes.

Finally, Shahidi shares her go-to travel outfit: a Krispy Kreme hat, paired with color-coordinating sneakers. “This became my favorite hat when I realized I have matching shoes—I call these the Krispy Kreme 200s,” she says. “I travel very casually, so these touches make me feel like myself.”

Below, find out what’s in Shahidi’s carry-on—as well as where she’s dreaming of traveling to next.
