From S Jaishankar to Diljit Dosanjh: Who joined Meta’s new Threads app on Day 1?
Mark Zuckerberg-led Meta launched a new social media app on Thursday, sparking a download frenzy. The microblogging platform – named Threads – bears a striking resemblance to Elon Musk-led Twitter and has so far seen more than 10 million downloads in less than seven hours. The growing list of account holders also includes a slew of Bollywood celebrities, top government officials and more.
Here are of some of the leading Indians who joined on Day 1:
- S Jaishankar
- Nikhil Kamath
- Ashneer Grover
- Diljit Dosanjh
- Kunal Shah
- Kajol
- Taapsee Pannu
- Tamannaah Bhatia
- Parineeti Chopra
- Vijay Shekhar Sharma
- Nakuul Mehta
- Sunny Leone
- Twinkle Khanna
- Masaba Gupta
- Priyanka Chaturvedi
- Debina Bonnerjee
- Anupam Mittal
- Varun Sood
How does Threads work?
While Threads is a standalone app, users can log in using their Instagram credentials, which makes it an easy addition for Instagram’s more than 2 billion monthly active users.
Threads accounts are synched to Instagram at the outset, allowing users to keep their usernames and retain followers. Posts can be up to 500 characters long and include links, photos and videos up to five minutes long.
Threads vs Twitter
Meta’s apps have competed indirectly for user attention with Twitter in the past by courting news publishers, politicians and other high-profile people to favor posting on one versus the other. The arrival of Threads marks the first time Meta is releasing a Twitter lookalike.
“There should be a public conversations app with 1 billion-plus people on it. Twitter has had the opportunity to do this but hasn’t nailed it. Hopefully we will,” Meta Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg said in a post on his Threads account.
