From Rangkaat to Kalamkari: Top 5 summer sari trends of 2022 – Times of India

Trends may come and go, but the sari stays forever in Indian closets. With the sun on our heads and style in our hearts, sari being basic Indian wear when it comes to ethnic dressing, trends have come up to match the heat and trend. We got in touch with
Asha Gautam, Founder of Label by Asha Gautam to list the top summer sari trends of the year.

Organza saris are going to rule the season as they have an elegant and polished sheer look. They go well with any occasion, from formal to casual, working well with prints, applique and embellishments. An organza sari in floral embroidery is the one to go for. With sequins and resham work, it can add a glamorous look to the one donning it. Organza sari in ombres of two or three colours are soothing to the eyes as the colours range from vibrant to pastels and can be styled as concept saris too if paired rightly with accessories, belts and minimal jewellery. One can make it vintage by pairing it with brocade of silk blouses and contemporary by pairing edgy ones.

Bandhani and leheriya, the colourful and lightweight flowy sari, like always will be trending this season too as it is comfortable to carry and comes with vibrant summery colours. These never go out of trend and mark the royalty of Rajasthan’s culture. Embellished with hand-embroidered borders and in colours apart from the traditional red- one can opt for aqua, cerulean, green and blues and lime to give that traditional piece pop up look while keeping with the tradition. For a muted look opt for pastel bandhani paired with statement jewellery.

For crisp and formal occasions Kota with tissue and zari in pastels will take a fresh seat this season with florals in vibrant colours. Lightweight, airy and timeless handcrafted in woven and now experimented with printing, the Kota Doria sari is a good choice this season. Lots of new motifs have made them more interesting. Even the appliqué of paithani border or patola ones make it even more festive.

Rangkaat Banarasi sari is the one for summer if one wants to sport the regal look. A happy transformation that it has taken keeping in mind the summers is that it now comes in organza Banarasi- perfect for that summer wedding. The colour blocking in pastel shades makes it colourful yet very classy as it is interlaced with zari that keeps up with the bling factor of the occasion. Newer patterns and colour combination in rangkaat is making sari lovers more contented.

Lastly, the Kalamkari sari in modal, light silk and satin, crepes and georgettes is always a head-turner with its detailed hand-painted motifs and a cultural representation that can be worn in various styles, looks ranging from traditional to chic modern. It can be worn as a full kalamkari or a kalamkari border sari. Now with design intervention, it is possible to design kalamkari with various crafts of the country. For example, a kalamkari body with a kanjivaram or a paithani border. Even a two pattern kalamkari sari where palla (pallu) and skirt have distinct yet related design story is truly alluring.
