France flops are panned by L’Equipe after Nations League loss to Denmark

France’s misfiring flops have been panned after they finished their UEFA Nations League campaign with a 2-0 defeat to Denmark on Sunday night.

Didier Deschamps’ side managed to avoid relegation from the competition’s elite tier but only because Austria were beaten by Croatia.

Their latest underwhelming performance doesn’t bode well for their World Cup title defence in Qatar this November and French newspaper L’Equipe didn’t hold back in their criticism.

Olivier Giroud, Ferland Mendy, Eduardo Camavinga, Aurelien Tchouameni, Dayot Upamecano and William Saliba all received a miserable 3/10 rating for their performances.

And it wasn’t a whole lot better for Kylian Mbappe, Antoine Griezmann and Benjamin Pavard, who were awarded 4/10.

The highest score the newspaper awarded was 5/10, given to goalkeeper Alphonse Areola and defender Benoit Badiashile, while coach Deschamps got 4/10 as the pressure mounts on his position.

Goals from Kasper Dolberg and Andreas Skov Olsen consigned France to another defeat at the Parken in Copenhagen, meaning they took just five points from a possible 18 in Group A1.

On Giroud, L’Equipe said the forward ‘had too little influence offensively’ with ‘no shots attempted and just 21 touches’ on the night.

Mbappe was criticised for ‘too many missed opportunities’ and being unable ‘to have a concrete influence on the game.’

Camavinga, who has only just stepped up into the senior team, was described as being ‘uninspired in his choices and in the duels.’

His Real Madrid club-mate Mendy ‘lost the ball after 10 seconds of play and that set the tone for the evening’. He was further criticised for a ‘poor sense of placement’ and being ‘too passive’.

Denmark’s ratings were naturally much higher, although the fact goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel received 8/10 highlighted the important saves he made to keep France at bay.
