Forrest in classy gesture to late Celtic legend Auld’s family after semi-final win

IN A classy gesture James Forrest has given his shirt from the Premier Sports Cup semi-final win to the family of late Celtic legend Bertie Auld.

Much-loved Lisbon Lion Auld sadly passed away aged 83 on November 14 prompting an outpouring of tributes to the Parkhead icon.

Auld, who spent 12 years at Celtic across two spells, was also a Scotland international and enjoyed trophy-laden spells in Glasgow’s east end.

Celtic paid tribute to Auld, who had battled dementia, during Saturday’s semi-final with every player wearing his number 10 on their shorts.

Following a minute’s applause, supporters also paid tribute to Auld with an emotional display unveiled during the match just days after the tragic news of his passing.

And Forrest made his own gesture to the family of Auld as he gifted them his shirt after scoring the only goal in the win over St Johnstone.

He hailed Auld as one of the club’s “greatest ever legends” as he spoke of his honour to represent Celtic with Auld’s number.

Revealing the classy gesture, Forrest told the club website: “Bertie meant so much to the Club and our supporters, he was everything to his family and we know they are missing him so much.

“The boys were really honoured to wear Bertie’s number on Sunday and we were delighted to get the result on a really emotional day.

“For me to get the goal was special but the whole team did brilliant to get the victory.

“We know what a tough time it’s been for the family and we just wanted them to have something from the match and from the day that we remembered one of our greatest ever legends.”
