Steven Gerrard has admitted that he has always been a fan of Manchester United legend Roy Keane and would have been keen to have played with him.
The former Liverpool captain believes that he and Keane would have formed a brilliant duo as the Irishman would have been able to offer protection to the defence while he played further forward.
Now the manager of Aston Villa, Gerrard, thinks that the ‘consistency’ that Keane, despite being rivals in their playing days, displayed during his 12 years at Old Trafford is something that his whole generation took note of.

Keane was one of Sir Alex Ferguson’s trusted captains during the Scot’s time at the club.
The Irishman netted 33 times in his 326 Premier League appearances for United as well as winning seven Premier League titles, four FA Cups and a UEFA Cup, before leaving the club in 2005, when he moved to SPL giants Celtic.
Ahead of Villa’s Premier League match against Everton, Gerrard said pitch-side on BT Sport:’ I’ve always been a massive fan of Roy Keane, not Man United.
‘I think for all our generation watching Roy Keane’s consistency levels, how he went about it, I like to get into the box and having someone who would have been able to protect me in there and do some of my dirty work.

‘I think he was the best at it so I would probably go with Roy Keane.’
Gerrard enjoyed a successful playing career of his own, winning the Champions League, FA Cup twice and League Cup three times with Liverpool as well as establishing himself as one of the best midfielders the Premier League has ever seen.
After retiring from playing football Keane moved into management, having spells at Sunderland and Ipswich Town before becoming an assistant coach at the Republic of Ireland, Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest.
