Former F1 star Martin Brundle says Daniel Ricciardo will get AXED by McLaren for 2023

Martin Brundle says Daniel Ricciardo needs THREE strong performances to save his McLaren seat with Aussie veteran fighting for his Formula One future amid terrible season

  • The Australian veteran has endured a miserable time of it at McLaren this year
  • Martin Brundle believes Ricciardo is at risk of being axed by his current team

McLaren driver Daniel Ricciardo has had a miserable start to the 2022 F1 season, and legendary commentator Martin Brundle is of the opinion the affable Aussie is up against it to be on the team in 2023, despite being under contract.

Ricciardo was mediocre in his first year at McLaren last season, notching just the one win and one podium – but he has regressed even further this year, while teammate Lando Norris continues to build nicely.

Eyebrows were raised when McLaren bosses said Ricciardo had not met ‘his or our expectations’ after another disappointing result, this time at the Monaco GP.

Ricciardo signed a three-year deal with the team in May 2020, reportedly on $32million per year.

Brundle, himself a former driver, believes McLaren has no choice but to move on from their expensive mistake.

‘They can’t take this into 2023,’ Brundle said of Ricciardo’s form and the apparent team disunity. ‘The team is too big and there’s too much at stake,’ he told News Corp.

The only way Ricciardo can save his spot next year, according to Brundle, is a dramatic turnaround on the track.

‘Three strong results to show he’s still got it will help everybody relax. Otherwise, I can imagine both parties sitting down at the end of the year or before the end of the year saying, this is not working. This is not working for us,’ said Brundle.

That will certainly be tough for Ricciardo, who can’t blame all of his troubles on the car.
