In search of its next head coach, the Duke Blue Devils football program appears to be looking at the recently departed offensive coordinator of the NFL’s “Big Blue.”
Garrett lasted less than two seasons at the head of the New York Giants’ offense but has held various other roles in the NFL over the last 17 years. The 55-year-old served as the quarterbacks coach for the Miami Dolphins under Nick Saban in 2005 and 2006 before joining the Dallas Cowboys.
Garrett was the Dallas offensive coordinator in 2007 and the assistant head coach and offensive coordinator from 2008 until midway through the 2010 campaign. Following a 1-7 start that season, Dallas fired head coach Wade Phillips, and Garrett was moved into the role.
The former Princeton, Cowboys and Giants signal-caller stayed on as Dallas’ head coach through the 2019 season, compiled an 85-67 record and was named the 2016 NFL Coach of the Year. Under Garrett, the Cowboys made the playoffs three times but went just 2-3 in their postseason appearances.
Under 14th-year head coach David Cutcliffe, Duke started the 2021 season 3-1 but finished on an eight-game losing skid to end at 3-9. Cutcliffe posted a 77-97 regular-season mark and 3-3 record in bowl games while with the program.
