Fremantle’s David Mundy has emerged as one of the most liked footy players in the AFL this year – and an absolutely filthy act this weekend may have endeared him even more to fans.
The veteran is having one of the best season’s of his career at the age of 36 and seemingly can do no wrong.
His quality as an ambassador for the sport has never been questioned — and it was best shown in the game against the Crows when his random act of kindness was highlighted by a viral tweet sent to Fremantle’s official Twitter account that showed his classy interaction with a Crows supporter.
It’s why an apparently salty snub is attracting interest in the wash-up of Fremantle’s drought-breaking derby win over West Coast on Sunday.
There was one moment in the heated contest when Mundy offered a hand to Liam Ryan as the Eagles star was left sitting down following a scrappy play that resulted in a ball-up.
Mundy’s outstretched hand — an offer to help pull Ryan to his feet — paused in front of Ryan for a brief moment before it was pulled away right at the second Ryan went to grab it.
Whether deliberate or not, it was enough to get the On The Couch panel cackling on Fox Footy on Monday night.
“Got ya,” Demons legend Garry Lyon said after the clip was played.
“This game that started yesterday was unsociable, it was mean and it was nasty and I knew they were playing for keeps when I saw this.”
Ryan was left clutching at thin air and sheepishly got to his feet without assistance.
Fremantle’s win has plunged a dagger into the Eagles’ hopes of playing finals footy and kept the Dockers slim hopes of making the eight alive.
The 12.7 (79) to 9.10 (64) result left the Eagles in ninth spot on the ladder after the round, outside of the top eight for the first time since Round 6.
The Bombers now need to only beat Collingwood and Greater Western Sydney need to take care of Carlton, in Round 23, to extend their seasons beyond it.
And for the first time since 2009, neither of the WA-based sides will progress beyond the home and away fixtures.
After storming home to almost beat Melbourne a week earlier after a lightning delay in the final term, the Eagles again flew home to almost pinch victory against the Dockers.
Led by ruckman Nic Naitanui, they came back from 40 points down in the second quarter, to get to within six.
Like the Demons lead a week earlier though, the early margin of almost seven goals was too much to make up.
A Caleb Serong individual effort midway through the final term to shake off a Dom Sheed tackle and snap his side’s only goal of the final term was enough.
