Football stars arrive at Celtic Park for Lisbon Legend Bertie Auld’s funeral
STARS across the world of football and beyond have begun arriving for the funeral of Lisbon Lions legend Bertie Auld which takes place in Glasgow today.
Former Celtic manager Neil Lennon, Frank McAvennie, Stephen McManus, Celtic Chairman Ian Bankier and actor Gianni Capaldi have all been spotted ahead of the funeral. As well as former Lisbon stars such as Jim Craig and the current squad member Kyogo Furuhashi.
The service begins in St Mary’s Church in the city’s Calton at noon.
A cortege will pass by Celtic Park and last respects will be paid at the Celtic Way before a private cremation by his family.
Celtic will broadcast the funeral live at the stadium.
The former footballer died on November 14 at the age of 83. It was previously announced earlier this year had been suffering from dementia.
Auld – a key member of Jock Stein’s European Cup-winning side of 1967 – enjoyed two spells at Parkhead as a player and racked up over 150 appearances for the club.
Celtic’s players wore shorts with the No.10 on them in honour of Bertie Auld during Saturday’s Premier Sports Cup semi-final against St Johnstone.
A flood of tributes from around Scottish football attested to Auld’s skill as a player and a manager, and character as a man.
Supporters can also leave their own tributes to Bertie in an online Book of Remembrance on the club’s official website.
