Football Star Samuel Umtiti Is Ready for His Fashion Era
Cameroon-born defender Samuel Umtiti is already an international football star playing for Lecce, but now he has his sights set on becoming a force in fashion as well. While many in France may immediately recognize him for his finesse and power on the football field thanks to his past World Cup win, he has a deep interest in streetwear, as evidenced by his collection of classic tees, statement denim, and chunky sneakers. Umtiti is most comfortable when sporting a logo denim set by Dior or a head-turning set by Louis Vuitton, which tracks, as he has his eyes set on becoming even more familiar with European fashion houses.
Yesterday, Umtiti attended Pharrell Williams’ debut presentation for Louis Vuitton at Pont Neuf alongside stars such as Beyoncé and Rihanna. Umtiti’s look for the show was created by KidSuper founder Colm Dillane and styled by Lycia Lamini. He accessorized his silk collared shirt featuring a multi-colored, hand-drawn painting and matching maroon suit pants with a rare pair of Louis Vuitton Skate sneakers, also in maroon, and an archival lilac bag. “We shared the right vision of honoring KidSuper for this outfit,” Umtiti tells Vogue.
Lamini, a North African multi-hyphenate who cut her teeth as a part of creative teams for Cardi B and Lil Nas X, is dedicated to building up Umtiti’s fashion image. “I really want him to become a fashion icon for athletes,” the stylist said. Given that it’s currently men’s fashion week in Paris, Lamini and Umtiti have the perfect opportunity to take in the designs of some of the biggest and most exciting fashion brands. First up: Givenchy’s men’s show. Umtiti and Lycia also recently visited the Acne Studios showroom while they traveled to New York City recently. “He was really stepping out of his comfort zone because that’s not really a brand that he’s familiar with,” Lamini said.
