Focus – Egypt struggles to combat scourge of violence against women
Issued on: Modified:
In 2017, a report from the Thomson Foundation named the Egyptian capital Cairo as the world’s most dangerous city for women. Some 99 percent of female residents there report having been sexually harassed. Egyptian women also struggle to access healthcare, education and the labour market. For a long time, it was taboo to even discuss these topics. But that was until the rise of a new generation of feminist activists, who are using the internet and social media to denounce sexual violence and support victims. Our correspondents report.
Egyptian society is gradually changing: women are more educated than before and are beginning to stand up for their rights. Little by little, the whole population is becoming aware of the extent of the problem. A recent femicide has received unprecedented media coverage: TV presenter Shaimaa Gamal was killed by her husband, a famous judge. He was sentenced to death for the murder of his wife, who had spoken out against domestic violence in a message on social media a few days before her death.
