Florida sets College World Series record to force deciding championship game
The Florida Gators were not going to go down in the College World Series without a fight.
The delivered an emphatic win on Sunday evening while facing elimination, setting a College World Series record in a 24-3 win over the LSU Tigers.
The 24 runs are the most runs ever scored by a team in a College World Series game, and the win forces a decisive Game 3 on Monday night to decide the 2023 national champion.
Florida’s bats started going early with a six-run third inning that included a grand slam from right fielder Ty Evans. It was one of two home runs that Evans hit on the day as he drove in five runs.
He was one of three Gators players to drive in at least five runs, joining Wyatt Langford and Jac Caglianone. Caglianone also hit two home runs in the win for Florida.
The big question for LSU on Monday will be whether or not ace Paul Skenes will be available, and in what capacity.
Starting him would be throwing him on three days rest, and he has pitched a lot this season and during the postseason.
He is LSU’s best pitcher — and one of the best pitchers in the country — but that would be putting a huge workload on him.
He is projected to be one of the top-two picks in the 2023 MLB Draft in a couple of weeks, and potentially even the No. 1 overall pick to the Pittsburgh Pirates.
No matter who goes it figures to be quite a scene in Omaha as two of the best teams in the country play a winner-take-all championship game.
