For Florence Pugh, acting and cooking have always gone hand in hand. “I’ve played, throughout my entire career, very intense characters,” she explains. “When I get home, I really need to get back to my usual self—so I will always cook myself dinner.” Pugh’s decompression meal typically includes what she calls her “garlicky crostini”; namely, a toasted bread appetizer with garlic, feta, coriander, chili, and tomato pulp. (Oh, and anchovies. Although only, Pugh clarifies, if you enjoy them.)
In a video for Vogue, Pugh gives us step-by-step instructions on how to make the recipe. Okay, not quite step-by-step—the actor, for example, doesn’t remember the precise temperature the oven should be, but she wings it. “I always like making a few mistakes, because to me, that’s where the best food comes from,” she says.
Pugh also touches on how women, especially in Hollywood, can have a complicated relationship with food. When Pugh took one of her first major acting jobs, she discovered just how ingrained diet culture was within the industry: “It was expected that you would be on whatever diet that you needed to be on—and for me, that was just shocking,” she says.
But the ultimate hosting tip from Pugh? Perfecting the art of the martini, with a glass pulled straight from the freezer, a shaker filled with ice and vodka, and a perfectly-formed lemon peel twist. “Pour that wonderful nectar into your glass,” Pugh says. “And now? We can continue cooking!”
