The inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) commenced on Saturday with the opening match between Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Giants at the DY Patil Sports Stadium in Navi Mumbai.


Chasing a target of 208 runs set by Mumbai Indians, Gujarat Giants were 16 for 4 in 5 overs when reports last came in.


Put into bat, Mumbai posted 207 for 5 in stipulated 20 overs. Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur was the top scorer with 65 runs, followed by Hayley Matthews with 47 and 45 by Amelia Kerr. Sneh Rana bagged two wickets while Ashleigh Gardner, Tanuja Kanwar and Georgia Wareham took one wicket each.


Earlier, Gujarat Giants skipper Beth Mooney won the toss and opted to field in the match. Harmanpreet Kaur leads the Mumbai side.


Ahead of the start of the opening game, in a glittering opening ceremony, actors Kiara Advani and Kriti Sanon and singer AP Dhillon took the stage on fire before the trophy for the tournament was unveiled.


The other three teams taking part in the tournament are Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Delhi Capitals (DC) and UP Warriorz (UPW). Smriti Mandhana will lead RCB while Australian player Meg Lanning will be at the helm of Delhi Capitals and Australian wicketkeeper and batter Alyssa Healy is leading UP Warriorz in the tournament.
