Rio Ferdinand leads messages of support to former Man United team-mate Edwin van der Sar, who was taken into intensive care in Croatia with a brain haemorrhage

Edwin van der Sar’s former teammates and fans have sent him well wishes following the news that he has been hospitalised.

‘On Friday, Edwin van der Sar has had a bleeding around his brain. He’s currently in hospital in the intensive care unit and is in a stable condition,’ Ajax said in a statement on Twitter before wishing him a speedy recovery.

‘Everyone at Ajax wishes Edwin a speedy recovery. We’re thinking of you.’ 

Another one of his former clubs, Manchester United have joined in as they tweeted: ‘Sending all our love and strength to you, Edwin.’

Van der Sar’s former teammate Rio Ferdinand has also wished him well, writing: ‘Ed is a fighter. Our thoughts are with the Van der Sar family!’. 

Fulham, another one of Van der Sar’s former clubs, also sent their messages of support.

The Cottagers wrote: ‘Everyone at Fulham Football Club wishes Edwin a speedy recovery. We’re thinking of you.’ 

It was earlier confirmed that the former goalkeeper had been admitted to hospital in Croatia as he was flown to hospital by helicopter while he was on holiday.

This news comes over a decade since Van der Sar was given compassionate leave by Man United to be with his wife Annemarie van Kesteren after she also had a brain hemorrhage which had made her ‘very poorly’. 

Ajax confirmed the news on Friday as they wrote: ‘On Friday, Edwin van der Sar has had a bleeding around his brain. He’s currently in hospital in the intensive care unit and is in a stable condition.’
