‘Feels like end of long rope for him’: Twitterati react after Ajinkya Rahane gets out cheaply again

Team India vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane’s poor form continued in the fourth Test at the Oval against England as he got out for a duck in the second innings on Day 4 and now averages 18.17 in the seven innings he has batted in the series.

Rahane has only one significant score this series, of 61 runs in the second innings at Lord’s when India had lost three early wickets and needed a partnership when he and Cheteshwar Pujara combined to take their side to safer shores.

However, apart from that innings, Rahane has returned with scores of 5, 1, 18, 10, 14 and 0 scoring just 48 runs in the remaining six innings.

While Rahane may be lacking confidence himself, he was demoted to No 6 by the team management in both innings of the Oval Test and another failure might now mean he may be dropped for the fifth and final Test at Old Trafford.

This is also the first time since 2015 that Rahane’s Test average has dropped below 40 having played 57 matches since then.

Fans, experts were in unison saying that Rahane doesn’t look his usual self and has to be dropped for the final Test. While some mentioned that it may not be Rahane’s fault having got so many chances as he should have been dropped earlier as the team management hasn’t been brave enough to drop their vice-captain because of his poor run of form.
