‘Feels like end of long rope for him’: Twitterati react after Ajinkya Rahane gets out cheaply again
Team India vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane’s poor form continued in the fourth Test at the Oval against England as he got out for a duck in the second innings on Day 4 and now averages 18.17 in the seven innings he has batted in the series.
Woakes on Traps Rahane in front to severely dent India’s charge.

Rahane has only one significant score this series, of 61 runs in the second innings at Lord’s when India had lost three early wickets and needed a partnership when he and Cheteshwar Pujara combined to take their side to safer shores.
However, apart from that innings, Rahane has returned with scores of 5, 1, 18, 10, 14 and 0 scoring just 48 runs in the remaining six innings.
While Rahane may be lacking confidence himself, he was demoted to No 6 by the team management in both innings of the Oval Test and another failure might now mean he may be dropped for the fifth and final Test at Old Trafford.
This is also the first time since 2015 that Rahane’s Test average has dropped below 40 having played 57 matches since then.
Fans, experts were in unison saying that Rahane doesn’t look his usual self and has to be dropped for the final Test. While some mentioned that it may not be Rahane’s fault having got so many chances as he should have been dropped earlier as the team management hasn’t been brave enough to drop their vice-captain because of his poor run of form.
Here are some of the reactions:
Have loved watching Rahane bat over the years. Lord’s, Wellington, Durban, and Melbourne… twice over, and a few other moments.
This feels like end of the long rope! #EngvInd

It’s not Rahane’s fault that India have persisted with him despite the failures. Management has simply not been brave enough to drop the vice-captain and that is constantly hurting the national team now. Future bleak for him, esp after batting-order demotion. #ENGvIND

Drop Rahane. But I am not saying drop Rahane forever, let him pile some runs in domestic cricket maybe and get that form back. But for the next test, please drop him. #ENGvIND

Is this the end of Rahane’s career? If they think Jadeja is a more sensible promotion ahead of him, this has to be it. Should he be playing the next Test? Another failure. In terms of average and partnership runs, the vice-captain simply hasn’t cut it. pic.twitter.com/kfrOqxuFiO

#INDvENG Rahane is in such poor form that next match one more bowler will be replaced.

At this point, Ashwin can be a straight swap for Rahane as a batsman.
