Fear of God Expands Its Universe with Its Spring Essentials 2022 Collection
When Jerry Lorenzo, founder of Fear of God, was dreaming up his new collection, he was thinking about his wife: “we spend the most time together,” he tells us. So, he concentrated on easy, streetwear informed womenswear pieces for the first time, with his own sense of understated cool of course.
“I think understanding her needs and seeing what’s missing in her world, I was able to see things that I felt like I wanted to design into,” he adds, of the ESSENTIALS Spring 2022 collection, which includes 50 styles for women and with sizing in men’s and women’s sizes XXS – XXL and kids’ size 2/3 – 14/16. The collection also includes some covetable pieces that take inspiration from classic American style too. Think rugby and polo shirts featuring a new 1977 insignia, cable knit turtleneck sweaters, ’90s barn jackets redone in cool cotton blends, and wardrobe staples rendered in French terry and jersey. Oversized silhouettes reign supreme, with jackets, outerwear, and tops becoming supersized and incredibly identifiable with the brand. Utilitarian bomber jackets are reimagined to be softer, everyday staples.
True to Fear of God form, the color palette is centered on neutral tones of sand, rust, cream, and gray. “In the same way that, I’m scanning and observing how guys dress, I’m looking at women in the same way and saying, hey, maybe the short could be shorter, maybe this skirt could be longer, maybe this cardigan could have a little bit more volume,” says Lorenzo of his design process. “Before you know it, you look up and you’ve got an opinion on about 15 to 20 pieces.”
Fear of God has gained a cult-like following since it launched in 2013, so it’s no surprise that since dropping a collection that caters to men but also women and children, pieces are selling out fast. The introduction of womenswear to the Essentials line really taps into the louche, comfy cool style that the label has capitalized on, without feeling like there’s too much overlap between the menswear pieces. The simple skirts and easy dresses are made for comfort, but could also be transformed and dressed up with other wardrobe staples.
Lorenzo’s favorite pieces from the new collection are the cable knit, relaxed turtleneck sweater, and the knit long sleeve polo. Snap up your favorites before they’re gone below.
