Father of NPP candidate shot by unidentified miscreants in Manipur’s Imphal East district

Father of National People’s Party (NPP) candidate was shot by unidentified miscreants in Manipur’s Imphal East district. NPP has sought additional deployment of security forces alleging that elections cannot be free and fair.

NPP leader and Deputy Chief Minister Yumnam Joykumar Singh said on Saturday that the incident took place at the gates of the residence of the party’s Andro candidate L Sanjoy Singh when he, his father and some supporters were having an election-related discussion on Friday. The candidate’s father was hit on the right shoulder.

Meghalaya Chief Minister and NPP president Conrad K Sangma met the injured person at a hospital. Talking to media persons he said, “This is a very unfortunate incident, and it reflects the frustration of certain individuals. We will meet the Chief Electoral Officer and express our concern over the prevailing situation this election. I have been campaigning in Manipur since 2002, and I have never seen such extreme poll violence. This has to stop,”

Joykumar added,”The current trend suggests that the election is not going to be free and fair. Hence, we would demand additional deployment of paramilitary forces, the NPP will win 20 seats in the state, such attacks prove we are getting stronger.”

Elections to the 60-member assembly will take place in two phases on February 27 and March 5. Votes will be counted on March 10.

NPP, a part of the BJP-led government in Manipur, has complained to the Election Commission that its candidates were being threatened by militants.

In a statement, the NPP said its candidates were being intimidated and abused in a targeted manner by several militant outfits. It alleged that outfits such as the KNF-MC, KNF-Z, UKLF, KNA and HPC (D) had openly come out in a “blatant support” of its opponent’s candidates from the BJP and the Naga People’s Front (NPF).
