Australian golf fans will be able to watch the likes of Cameron Smith, Adam Scott and Minjee Lee take on the world’s best at The Open and the AIG Women’s Open for many years to come following a fresh multi-year deal between Foxtel and The R&A.

On Tuesday, Foxtel announced every round of The Open, as well as several other world-class championships, will be shown exclusively on Foxtel and Kayo from 2022 onwards.

Rebecca McCloy, Foxtel Group Commercial Director of Sports, said in a statement: “With 2.4 million subscribers now watching sport on Foxtel and Kayo, up 26 per cent on last year, the Foxtel Group provides the largest audience of dedicated sports fans in the country.

“Golf and The Open is fantastic entertainment and we have seen audiences grow 13 per cent on the last championship in 2019. Kayo has turbo-charged this growth, attracting a new legion of fans and with the AIG Women’s Open also available to watch live on Kayo Freebies, it provides even more opportunity for fans to access more of the world’s best golf.

“The 149th Open played this year drew the biggest audience since 2012 and the dedicated The Open pop-up channel on Foxtel saw over 3.4 million hours viewed.

“This exclusive multi-year agreement sees us secure the free and paid rights, making Foxtel and Kayo the only place to watch The Open, as well as The R&A’s other world-class golf events.”

Eleven Australians took part in this year’s Open back in July, joining golf stars Rory McIlroy, Brooks Koepka, Phil Mickelson, Bryson DeChambeau, Jordan Spieth and Louis Oosthuizen. Debutant Collin Morikawa held off a charge from Jordan Spieth to win by two shots.

The 150th Open next year will be played at St Andrews in Scotland, with the following two championships being held at Royal Liverpool and Royal Troon.

The British Open will return to Royal Portrush Golf Club in Northern Ireland in 2025, the R&A announced last week.

The links course previously hosted the championship in 1951 and again in 2019, when Irishman Shane Lowry won the claret jug.

R&A chief executive Martin Slumbers said: “We could not be more thrilled to be bringing the Open back to Royal Portrush in 2025.

“There will be huge excitement among golf fans around the world to see the best men’s players facing the challenge of this magnificent links once again.”
